Whether you want to indulge your adventurous side or simply enjoy the beauty of the season, there’s something close to your home to make the season memorable. Take a look at a few of our favorite winter activities in Des Moines.
WINTER ACTIVITIES IN DES MOINES, IA
Brenton Skating Plaza: Zip up your jacket, lace up your skates, and revel in the good old-fashioned fun of ice skating. Only 15 minutes from our Gray’s Station community in downtown Des Moines, if you're looking for a daytime excursion or a date night under the twinkling sky, this is the place to fulfill all of your winter wonderland dreams.
Backbone State Park: This winter, take a long weekend to slow down, disconnect from technology, and reconnect with nature. Just under 3 hours from Des Moines, Backbone State Park (with heated cabins available to rent) is the ideal getaway to enjoy simple living in the great outdoors.
Jester Park Nature Center: There’s snow much to do at Jester Park, you’ll never want to leave! Craving a little adventure? Rent snowshoes or cross-country skis and feel the wind through your hair as you “soak up the snow.” A short drive from The Banks, this is the perfect place to stay active while enjoying the beauty of the season.
Ledges State Park: There’s nothing like a refreshing hike through wintertime scenery. Known for its sandstone cliffs and deep-wooded river valley, Ledges State Park provides a breathtaking setting to hike through- and only a 30-minute drive from our Des Moines communities including The Banks, Gray’s Station, and Edison! Bundle up and experience the quiet wonders of this beautiful park in the winter.
Sledding at Waveland Golf Course: It’s time to sled! Perfect for the whole family, and only a 10-minute drive from The Banks and Gray’s Station, Waveland Golf Course in Des Moines provides the best sledding opportunities when there are at least 4 inches of snow. Cruise down the hills of the course and enjoy the timeless magic of this activity you and your family love.
